How much do you need to know about web sites in order to run a successful business?

“I don’t really want to know how to programme a website, I have a business to run” -we hear this a lot, and it is spot on! The majority of the companies on the eChampions programme are business with no real interest in web sites except they realise the importance of the web and want to utilise it as a marketing vehicle.

Subsequently it can be quite overwhelming to a business when we sit down with them one-2-one and suggest a whole range of changes in order to improve the performance of their site. Our advice can sound very time-consuming and maybe expensive, so what is the answer?

The answer is that there are two ways approaching the process:

 A. Outsource it all: You outsource the whole thing and don’t need to worry about the technical stuff. But in order to do this successful you still need to identify the areas for improvement on your site, and understand why the changes are important. This enables you to pick a good competent developer and it enables you to “talk their language” so you won’t feel out of your debt in meetings.

Maybe you just want to outsource little bits, or maybe just could just do with a one-off face-lift/snag-list to be sorted for you to get started. Ask us to help identify and prioritise which bits you need completing, and we can even help find you a good developer and get some quotes for the work – it is probably cheaper than you think and the results could be instant!

B. Break in down into manageble bits: If you would like keep control of you site and maintain it your self, you just need to break it all down into manageable chunks. Rome wasn’t built in a day and a bad web site isn’t fixed in a day!
Ask us to help you identify and prioritise what you should do first. Take out two hours on a Friday afternoon, twice a month to implement the most important changes, then wait and measure the results before moving to the next step.
It is all too easy for weeks and months to pass by without managing to get anything changed, and subsequently the performance of your website hasn’t improved either.

The key is to do something!
A business web site should have a purpose and generate income for you! But the key is to make changes to your site if you want to see changes in it’s performance.
There are always little tweaks you can do that will improve your site overnight, even for those who don’t want to be web developers.
