The John Lewis effect

We heard this phrase for the first time at the Internet Conference a couple of weeks ago and I think it is great! The Northwest tourist web site was showcased on a big screen and a big “wow” went through the room – the web site had the “John Lewis effect".

What effect does your website have on the visitor? Do they instantly thing “wow”, or do they instantly want to leave?

There is no denying that John Lewis makes everything look beautiful, calm and perfect – showcasing the life we would all love!

So couldn’t we use this on our websites and make them look “pretty and perfect” and represent everything the customer would like?

Keep your design clean, calm, beautiful quality images, not too many different colours, make it obvious where people should go…

And this is true for all industries, not just luxury hotels and jewellers; even if you sell drills and screws you can ensure high quality images and a good looking site!

Now go and have a fresh look at your site, is it more “Aldi effect” than “John Lewis effect?”

:o)
